Divine discontent, awakened by beauty.

There are moments in which the past becomes present in the most meaningful way. The sequence of events that brought us here, the diversity of experiences that shaped us, find a unity of feeling. It’s a feeling of contentment; a radical acceptance of what is. The most creative occasions happen when this acceptance of what is, opens to a future beyond the confines of the familiar. It’s not a closed contentment — a clinging to precious memories. Rather, it’s a contentment that allows all the details to flow, to come and go, to be or to pass as they please.

Can one be content with what is, yet drawn beyond; loving the present yet lured by what might be? Can one be grateful for all the experiences that brought you here yet radically open to more than can be imagined? What I’ve seen has filled me with wonder, yet I’m no closer to feeling that I’ve seen enough than when this quest first began.

Desire draws us from what is actual to what is possible. This divine discontent is awakened by a beauty that is not of this world — a vision of what is not … yet. It’s in the heart of this contented gratitude that a new divine discontent stirs. As we abide, desire awakens. (John 15:7)
